Spanish Moss and Azalea Blooms: Chasing Spring Across the Southern Sunbelt
The scent of blooming wisteria mixes with the salty breeze off the bay as you step out of the car. It is that fleeting window of time when the sun feels warm on your skin but the air remains comfortable enough for exploration. This is the sweet spot of spring in the South, a season defined not just by flowers, but by the promise of outdoor living before the summer heat rolls in. Having driven through these regions during various seasons, I can tell you that April and May offer a specific kind of magic where the humidity has not yet set in, allowing you to truly enjoy the outdoors.
The Draw

With warm but comfortable temps, and all of their beaches and outdoor activities available, these destinations make for some of the best spring trips. Whether you are traveling for delicious food, history and sightseeing, or time outdoors, here are some of the top spring travel destinations to visit in April and May. The region transforms into a garden state, where azaleas and wisteria are in full bloom and the temperatures are just right for exploring without a coat. It is the ideal moment to experience the culture al fresco, from sitting outside to comfortably enjoy a beignet to hiking on mountain trails without the oppressive heat of summer.
What to Expect
Each city offers a distinct flavor of Southern hospitality, though the experiences vary wildly from coast to desert. In Miami, FL, the vibe is energetic. We love Miami in the spring, even if it gets a little bit crowded with spring breakers. This time of year is ideal for lounging on the beach, exploring the colorful Wynwood Walls, or enjoying Miami's iconic nightlife scene. For a quieter moment, you can stroll through the lush gardens of Vizcaya Museum & Gardens.
Moving up the coast, Savannah, GA is a must. Known for its charming cobblestone streets, grand oak trees draped in Spanish moss, and historic squares, this city is stunning in the springtime. Forsyth Park bursts into full bloom. If the weather gets too warm, simply take a day trip to Tybee Island to relax on the beach. In Charleston, SC, food lovers will be in heaven, with everything from Lowcountry cuisine, to incredible fine dining, great drinks, and everything in between. You can stroll through the historic French Quarter to enjoy the foodie scene or take a selfie in front of the famed Rainbow Row of colorful houses.
Further inland, Austin, TX offers music, food, and outdoor adventure. Spring brings ideal weather for kayaking on Lady Bird Lake, or swimming in Barton Springs Pool with the locals. Meanwhile, New Orleans, LA is an absolute blast to visit any time of the year, but Spring is our favorite season. Strolling through the Garden District or taking a steamboat tour on the Mississippi are infinitely more enjoyable before the heat and humidity become too intense. Finally, Scottsdale, AZ is an absolute desert oasis. The city has perfect weather to take advantage of all of the outdoor activities in the region like hiking on Camelback Mountain.
